My initial inspiration for this ongoing series of landscape paintings came from pictures I had taken through the windows of a moving van during a cross country drive. My sister and I drove my father and all of his possessions from Detroit to Denver. I took photos with my iphone camera (sometimes while I was driving), and the images were often blurred, but retained the colors, shapes, and the "feeling" of the landscape.
I evoke this sense of motion in the paintings by pulling the paint across the canvas with a flexible plastic wedge. I also use sandpaper to create an initial smooth canvas and periodically sanding throughout the process of painting. This method produces unexpected forms, shapes, and transparent areas. Like taking photos from a moving vehicle - there is a certain amount of unpredictability about the results.
