After years of searching for my medium and my subject, I have settled on painting with oils with a focus on female figures that have emerged by their own force of will. My figures tend to be abstract and still. I present them as symbols, not portraits. They represent the beauty, craftiness, and tenacity of important women I have known. I attempt to draw out their interior psychological and spiritual lives. Recently, I have introduced other elements into my paintings based on botanical and animal images that are related to the world outside of the interior spaces that my figures inhabit.
I prefer oils to other mediums because it provides a tactile experience. I use my fingers and other objects at hand as well as my brushes to move paint around. I find it extremely satisfying to work and rework surfaces, sculpting images with coats of rich color. I strive convey layers of meaning through simplicity of form.
