Vast landscapes have been the focus of my work for most of my career. I made small black and white photographs of these open spaces because I wanted to create an intimacy between the viewer and the landscape. This format called for the viewer to step close to the photos, to enter into the piece of the world I captured for her or him. Recently I’ve been fascinated by the hidden, mostly unnoticed parts of the landscape—the fallen leaf or the seedpod. By removing them from their camouflaging habitat and shooting them in a simpler setting, I give them the chance to show us the splendor of their uniqueness. In addition to the expansive landscapes and the small detail images I am also am drawn to a wide variety of flowers, and photograph them both in their natural setting and in still-life form.
